Bolivia, land of contrasts and mysteries...

Two of the most significant images of my career where photographed in the Bolivian Altiplano. With Salar de Uyuni, I won the Professional Photography Awards in Spain (Landscape) 2014. It also won awards at the Australian Professional Photography Awards and was been finalist in several other international competitions.

The image of Seven Color Mountain has also received numerous accolades…

Bolivia is an incredible part of the world and together with GM. Photog Peter Eastway and I will be visiting those locations and other Bolivian highlights in September next year.

The trip is filling up quickly, please contact me if you were interested in coming along. All details are in my website here.

How “Confront” became “Heartbroken”…

In my opinion “heartbroken” is one of the best pictures I have ever created. I might be biased, and it might not be the strongest, but it is a very special one for what it represents…

Australian Professional Photography Awards 2018

Very happy with my results at the APPAs this year. I got 3 Silver Distinction awards and one Silver Award. My favorite images were “heartbroken” and “trapped” but the judges did not seemed to read the stories to put the prints into the gold range. In addition to those print awards, I got a Gold Distinction award for my Limited Edition Portfolio Book!

Back from an amazing adventure in Madagascar and Reunion!

The trip to Madagascar with Richard I’Anson has been one of the most amazing trips I have ever organised. There were opportunities to photograph people, landscapes, and lots of animals such as lemurs, colorful chameleons, geckos and insects. Conditions in the jungle were harsh sometimes and it was challenging to photograph some of these animals, but with practice and patience we all got some great images and some amazing experiences that we will never forget.

Exhibition at Ken Duncan's Gallery

I feel privileged to have been invited to exhibit in Ken Duncan’s Gallery on the NSW Central Coast.

Ken Duncan is passionate about encouraging other photographers. And he has been a great source of inspiration and encouragement to me. So when he invited me to bring a portfolio collection to his Gallery, I jumped at the chance…

Back from Finland and Lofoten!!

The photography tour to Scandinavia with Ken Duncan was amazing. We had really freezing conditions in Lapland (-30C a couple of times) but the images that we all captured were very special. I had never seen such an incredible landscape, surrounded by frozen trees. It was magical, like being in another planet!

| | The Creation of Welcome to Life

The Creation of Welcome to Life

Welcome to Life

Welcome to life was my favorite image of the four I entered at the Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPAs) in August last year. It scored a Gold Award (90).

The judging process was very exciting. At the beginning the image scored below 90 points; in the silver with distinction range. But a couple of judges scored gold. It was all set for a good discussion (and a good discussion is what you really want to see when your print appears in front of the 5 judges).

I was listening and watching every judge in the room and a couple of them looked at each other and smiled after looking at the print again. They had picked up the concept.

| | The Creation of Marismas

The Creation of Marismas

I am very proud of this image. It was shot in Spain (my country of origin) and received 92 points (A Gold Award) at the Australian Professional Photography Awards in Melbourne. It also won the Squarial Award in the International Landscape Photographer of the Year last year.

It is a completely manufactured image. Some people call it cheating but I call it art. Both competitions allow digital manipulation, something that I fully respect and support.

Photoshop is a great tool of modern photography and allows me to process and enhance an image I had previously captured and edit it to match what I had witnessed and felt and this means minor adjustments such as colour balance, brightness, contrast, sharpness etc.

| | Back from Vanuatu

Back from Vanuatu

I had never heard of Vanuatu but ever since I came to Australia in 2007 and I found out about this country, I have always wanted to visit it. In particular, I was very interested in photographing the land diving festival (Naghol), one of the most spectacular and death defying rituals in the world. It happens every Saturday between April and May at Pentecost Island, just 50 minutes away from Port Vila.

| | The Creation of Icehole

The Creation of Icehole

Icehole won a gold award at the Australian Professional Photography Awards this year and it is a composite image. This means that it is not real. A composite Image is a picture that is made from the combination of multiple images merged into one. It is a constructed creation.

The two images that were used to create Icehole were taken in Iceland whilst running a tour with Luke Austin and Adam Williams (The Light Collective). The iceberg was photographed at Black Sand Beach near Jökulsárlón and the ‘Icehole’ that frames the subject was photographed just outside an ice cave, also near Jökulsárlón.

My experience in South Georgia and Antarctica

Since 1998 I have travelled around more than 80 countries all over the word and visited and photographed thousands of amazing places. I have trekked in the most beautiful National Parks in the world, done hundreds of game drives all over Africa, and dived in some of the most amazing reefs in our oceans. I have taken aerial flights to photograph glaciers, mountains, lakes, reefs, volcanoes, and cities.

Back from the Red Centre

The Light Collective has just completed another photography workshop in the Red Centre of Australia, including Uluru, Kata Tujta, Kings Canyon and the West Mac Donnell Ranges.

Often as photographers we have to work really hard for our images, however every now and then mother nature will give us a special gift. Christmas came early in the red centre and we must be the nice kids, day after day mother nature turned up with gift after gift.

Retouching Ice and Snow: Skógafoss Waterfall

There is a technique that I frequently use when I am editing images that have a lot of ice and snow.

This consists of applying a combination of what I called Auto Curves (Photoshop), the Detail Extractor tool of Nik Software together with the Apply Image tool of Photoshop. This technique works really well and can make your image pop out of the screen…

DJI Phantom - A great little drone

January this year I bought a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone to take to Iceland and Norway withAdam Williams and Luke Austin (The Light Collective). I had looked at different brands and models and I decided to buy the DJI Phantom 3 pro, mainly because it portability and its price. This drone is light, small and very easy to set up and fly. It is the perfect drone for beginners and at about $AU1,399 it is a great tool to complement anyone’s camera gear…

TLC First Photography Workshop

The Light Collective First Photography Workshop

In February this year, three of the five members of The Light Collective (Luke Austin, Adam Williams and myself) went on an adventure above the arctic circle to capture images of Iceland and Lofoten (Norway) with 14 intrepid participants.

We are very happy as these were the first photography workshops organised by The Light Collective and they both were a great success. We had terrific weather, saw a few amazing auroras, and captured some great images.
