Sydney rock pools photographed in glorious light (SMH)

Spanish photographer Ignacio Palacios did his first ocean swim in 2009. It was from Bondi to Bronte and he thought he would smash it. “I swam a lot when I was younger and I trained for a month, so I thought, this is going to be easy, I’m going to win this race,” he says. After swimming hard for about 200 metres, he felt so drained he thought he was going to drown. He struggled on to the finish, where he was dumped by a wave on the way in. Exhausted, vomiting and with a searing headache, he swore to his Australian wife he would never, ever do an ocean swim again…

Back from Atacama/Uyuni

I am pleased to have now finalised the itinerary for 2015 to the Atacama desert (Chile) and Salar de Uyuni (Bolivia). You can see some of the pictures that I took in my last trip here.

The Atacama Desert is a plateau in South America and it is the driest hot desert in the world. El Salar de Uyuni (or Salar de Tunupa) is the world’s largest salt flat. The round trip from San Pedro de Atacama to El Salar de Uyuni has some incredible colourful lakes and beautiful desert landscapes.

My Camera Bag - F-Stop Satori EXP

My Medium Format Gear

I have received a few questions about what camera bag I carried to Patagonia. In this trip Pep and I were self-sufficient and had to carry everything with us (no porters). So I did a lot of research and I decided to take an f-stop Satori EXP. It is not cheap but it is very confortable, has plenty of pockets and I could fit all my medium format gear, plus food, sleeping bag and mat. I bought it from Camera Pro, one of our main sponsors. If you are interested in buying this or another F-stop camera bag, they will give you a 20% discount. And not only to people coming to the workshop but to everyone who reads this and lets them know.

Cerro Torre Post Processing

Cerro Torre Post Processing

Cerro Torre is one of the mountains of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field in South America. It is located in a region which is disputed between Argentina and Chile, west of Cerro Chalten (also known as Fitz Roy). The peak is the highest in a four mountain chain and the first time you see its peaks you can\‘t believe its beauty. The top of the mountain often has a mushroom of ice, formed by the constant strong winds, increasing the difficulty of reaching the actual summit.

Patagonia (Torres del Paine)

Step 1 – The Capture

As G. M. Photog Peter Eastways says, photography is two steps, the capture and the post-processing. Both are very important and both I love.

This photograph was taken in Torres del Paine National Park at sunrise (5.30 am). The weather over there can be tricky and we hadn\‘t seen the mountains at sunrise for a couple of days so we were a bit frustrated.

Sydney Rock Pools Project

The Sydney Rock Pools Project

Sydney\‘s coastline and harbour is home to a series of beautiful pools that have been cut into the base of cliffs and rocky headlands. Nearly every beach in Sydney has one pool, usually at the southern end, to give swimmers some protection when the southerly blows. Each pool has its own colorful history and interesting anecdotes.

Australian Geographic ANZANG Nature Photographer of the Year

I have been selected as one of the shortlisted photographers in the 2013 Australian Geographic ANZANG Nature Photographer of the Year. The lucky images are the underwater photograph that I took of a cuttlefish mating in Lady Elliot island, and again.. Hamersley Gorge\‘s spa pool !

The competition received 1828 images from photographers in 10 countries. The judges John Pickrell, editor of Australian Geographic, Maisie Keep, photo editor of Qantas: the Australian Way, and Wayne Osborn, overall winner of ANZANG in 2012, were delighted with the high standard of the submitted entries and found it difficult select the finalists. Thanks AG for organizing such a great competition.

Good luck to everyone !
